Are you Response-Able?

“When something goes wrong, we can either choose to act responsibly or resentfully.”
Many must have read this quote in school or in a newspaper.But how many of us have actually stopped and given it a thought to imbibe it? How many of us have ever tried to connect it to our lives and our big and small decisions?........Well, not many.

Now, lets try to understand this simple concept and see why its so important. Whenever something happens, we react to that situation. But between the occurrence of a situation and our reaction lies a small space. That small space contains our choice, the choice to react positively or negatively.

Yes, we can always choose the way we react to any situation. It would be wrong to say that a particular situation made me behave like that or it changed my attitude. We can choose the way we want to behave or mould our attitudes. We are what we want to become.

Mahatma Gandhi never gave in to any situation created by the British. He chose his actions and decisions and stood by them. If he can do this, then why can’t we?

This response ability gives rise to what we call as being “responsible”. This ability to make a choice is the stepping stone to forging our characters. The habit of taking impulsive decisions is a step towards self-destruction.

So, before becoming a people’s manager, we must learn to manage our self because personal management comes first and is rather a foundation for a successful team management.
So are you response-able?

Got.....................(Either you GET IT or you UNDERSTAND IT)

There is a tendency among many people to substitute 'GOT' for others verbs expressing possession, attainment, acquiring, achievement, arrival etc. Here is an example:

'I GOT on horseback within ten minutes after I GOT your letter. When I GOT to Canterbury, I GOT a Post Chaise for Town. But I GOT wet through before I GOT to Canterbury and I HAD GOT such a cold as I shall not be able to GET rid of easily. I GOT to Treasury about noon, but first of all I GOT shaved and dressed. I soon GOT into the secret of GETTING a memorial before the board, but I could not GET an answer then, however I GOT intelligence from the messenger that I should most likely GET one the next morning. As soon as I GOT back to my Inn, I GOT my supper and GOT to bed, it was not long before I GOT to sleep. When I GOT up in the morning, I GOT my breakfast, and then GOT myself dressed, that I might GET out in time to GET an answer to my memorial. As soon as I GOT it, I GOT into the Chaise, and GOT to Canterbury by three: and about tea time, I GOT home. I have GOT nothing particular for you, and so Adieu

This extract looks awkward but it looks better when 'GOT' is replaced with other apt words:

'I mounted my horse, or I was on Horseback within ten minutes after I received your letter. As soon as I arrived at Canterbury, I engaged (or hired) a post chaise for town. I was wet through before I reached Canterbury, and I had (or had taken) such a cold as I shall not easily cure. I arrived at the Treasury about noon, having previously shaved and dressed. I soon discovered the secret of introducing a memorial to the board. I could not however, obtain an immediate answer but the messenger told me, that I should probably receive one, next morning. I returned to my Inn, supt, went to bed, and slept well. I rose early and drest immediately after breakfast that I might be in time for the answer to my memorial. As soon as I received it, I took a post chaise, reached Canterbury by 3 PM, and my home about tea time. I have nothing particular to add.'

It is indeed my profound privilege to be able to communicate to my very “dear” probationary officers through this window. I take this opportunity to congratulate each one of them for all that they have contributed for both self and the organization through various efforts in the past trimester.

I am glad that this group realizes the need to create a competitive edge for themselves considering the constantly evolving industry. I am also happy to note the strong urge to succeed in each one of you to go beyond the possible and carve a niche for your own self. I would like to wish the very best for all your efforts not only today but inall the times to come. I would look forward to see this group touch new horizons of recognition and appreciation with all the learning that this association at IMA has imparted to them. I would like to end with a famous quote: “The toughest thing about success is that you’ve got to keep on being a success”.
